Ian demonstrates his method of portraying Venus after her liaison with Mars, the god of war. She is carved from limewood (European basswood), with some copper and silver embellishment, mounted on a 12 inch/30 cm diameter marble sphere. This challenging carving requires a very systematic approach, completing certain stages in order before attempting the next stages. It is quite difficult to access certain areas, and requires some ingenuity in the use of holding devices.

Because of the very large size of the timber needed for my Venus I have demonstrated the band sawing of a figure to fit a 7 inch / 17.5 cm which are fairly commonly available.
The figure laid over a ball is very striking and much in demand by my clients.  I hope you will enjoy the challenge – I think you will find it worth it.
