Best described here by our photograph illustrations, this Civil War CDV by J. W. Black of Boston, Mass features a Civil War infantry officer whose rumpled non regulation
sack
coat seems quite out of character to his impressive slouch hat complete with heavy bullion cord and infantry device with the regimental number 3.   A faded but legible notation on the back identified the subject simply as
Capt. Crossman
.  Substantiated by his photo on the Historical Document Systems database,
Robert Crossman
was a 34 year old resident old Dighton, Mass. when on 9/6/1862 he first enlisted and was commissioned as 1st Lt of Co. H
3rd Massachusetts Infantry
.  Mustering out with the 3rd Mass. on 6/26/1863, Crossman was commissioned 2nd Lt. of Co B
58th Mass. Infantry
on 9/23/1862.  He was promoted to Captain on 1/18/1864, was
wounded in action at
at
Cold Harbor
on 6/3/1864 and discharged for wounds on10/11/1864.
